🧞♂️ Leveling Up in FKR | My method
I’ve been experimenting with a simple yet uncommon way of handling level ups in my game, so I thought you might like it as well.
Experience Points
Instead of earning XP by defeating enemies, you earn XP by surpassing dangerous situations and accomplishing missions. You only need 10 points to level up. You get 1 every session, just because you participated. You also get +1 for each dangerous encounter and +1 for each meaningful objective you complete. That means you get around 2 to 4 XP per session.
The Experience points are given at the end of the session.
Leveling Up
When a player gather 10 points, they can spend it all to level up. Then you ask this to them:
— What is your current long term goal for your level ups?
— I wanna be able to lift my great sword with one hand.
— Great. Where are you in relation to that goal?
— Well, last time you said my character struggles to simply hold that blade with both hands.
— Ok, so write in your sheet that you are strong enough to hold the great sword with both hands, without struggle. This may allow him to momentarily hold it with one hand.
And then you move on. In their next level up, they become closer and closer to that goal. Since the level up happens every 3 or 4 sessions, they can feel the progress in an acceptable pace no matter the level.
That’s it. No fluff, just a simple structured dialog between referee and player. So lets answer another question that might come from your cute brain:
Where is my +1 Ability Bonus?
